Senate President Dismisses 2027 Threat: “Opposition Has No Roadmap, Only Noise”
The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed the optimism surrounding the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the alliance as “unrealistic” under Nigeria’s existing electoral framework.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NIVONEWS, Akpabio made the remarks while speaking at the House of Representatives Open Week in Abuja. He emphasized that only registered political parties, not coalitions or individuals, are legally empowered to sponsor candidates for elective office in Nigeria.
He cautioned the public not to be swayed by what he called political theatrics, warning:
“You can’t belong to two political parties at the same time. It’s deceptive and constitutionally impractical.”
Addressing public expectations, Akpabio also clarified that lawmakers are not executive officers, and as such, should not be expected to deliver infrastructure projects.
“People must understand that the primary responsibility of legislators is to make laws, not to build roads or hospitals. That’s the executive’s role,” he noted.
At the same event, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, provided an update on the ongoing constitutional amendment process. He announced that 10% of legislative seats would be reserved for women, while 5% would be allocated to persons with disabilities in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Abbas said the initiative is part of efforts to promote greater inclusion and equitable representation in the country’s political space, adding that the process is making steady progress and could bring substantial change ahead of the 2027 polls.
Akpabio’s comments came in response to a major opposition gathering held on July 2, 2027, in Abuja, during which key political leaders officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s platform for the upcoming elections.
At the meeting, former Senate President David Mark was named interim national chairman, while former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was appointed secretary.
The event was attended by a host of influential political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and Sadique Abubakar, among others.
