“He Couldn’t Afford Luxury, But He Bought Integrity” — Garba Shehu on Buhari’s Exit
Former President Muhammadu Buhari exited office with his integrity untainted, as no one can truthfully claim to have bribed him, his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, stated on Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Garba Shehu, former presidential spokesperson, has revealed that ex-President Muhammadu Buhari left office without wealth but with his integrity intact, stressing that no one can truthfully claim to have bribed him. He dismissed persistent allegations that Buhari lacked academic credentials, describing them as politically motivated fabrications from the 2015 election cycle.
Speaking in Abuja ahead of the launch of his memoir, According to The President: Lessons from A Presidential Spokesman’s Experience, Shehu also took a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stating that the ex-leader never expected to face negative media scrutiny during his tenure from 1999 to 2007.
“Shehu explained that Buhari rarely granted media interviews because he wasn’t one for theatrics. ‘Buhari is one of the most voracious readers I know. Every morning, he requested newspapers. But he chose not to speak often to the press because he wanted his work to speak for him, not publicity,’” he said.
Reflecting on life after office, Shehu added, “Buhari is broke. Since he stepped down, no journalist has called me for a reaction or a crisis management quote. Now, I sleep peacefully.”
Shehu said the upcoming 260-page book offers insights from his years in presidential communications, including challenging periods in government. He recounted how, during President Obasanjo’s second term, a bitter power struggle broke out between him and Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which sparked threats, fear, and intense political battles.
“At one point, Atiku even went underground,” he said. “As his spokesman, I faced severe scrutiny, arrests, and detentions by the DSS, including a period in Kuje prison. I went through a two-year-long court trial before finally being acquitted.”
Shehu also recalled how his ties to Bayo Onanuga, now President Tinubu’s media aide, once sparked a misunderstanding with Obasanjo. According to him, a damning cover story on Obasanjo in The News magazine, authored by Onanuga, led Obasanjo to suspect that Shehu—then Atiku’s spokesman—was behind the piece.
“Obasanjo believed no bad press could be published about him unless it was orchestrated. Someone close to me fed him that suspicion, linking me to the story simply because of my friendship with Onanuga. That’s the climate we operated in—one of paranoia and suspicion between the president and his deputy.”
