Ghanaians Trapped by Fake Employment Offers Rescued in Nigeria
Ghanaian police have announced the rescue of 76 nationals trafficked to Nigeria through a bogus recruitment scheme.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Most of the victims—primarily young men—were deceived with enticing offers of football contracts with top international clubs, overseas job opportunities, or assistance in visa processing.
Upon arriving in Nigeria, the victims had their travel documents and mobile phones confiscated and were confined to overcrowded, poorly maintained accommodations, according to police reports.
They were then forced to call their families to solicit about $1,000 (approximately £727) under the pretense of covering training or facilitation fees. The traffickers also allegedly exploited their phone contact lists to defraud friends and relatives. So far, seven Ghanaian nationals have been arrested in connection with the trafficking scheme.
At a press briefing, Lydia Yaako Donkor, head of Ghana’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said the rescue mission was executed in partnership with Interpol and Nigerian security agencies.
The victims were recovered from various Nigerian states between May 19 and June 27 and are yet to be repatriated and reunited with their families back in Ghana.
Donkor urged families to thoroughly verify claims of lucrative job offers or educational opportunities abroad before committing to them. She explained that once individuals fall into the scam, they are often instructed to travel by road to unfamiliar countries.
Upon arrival, victims are transferred to so-called “holding camps”—cramped rented spaces where up to 40 people live in subhuman conditions. Under duress, they are coerced into recruiting others into the same trap, sometimes even deceiving their own relatives and friends.
“The psychological and financial toll on the victims and their families is immense,” Donkor said, adding that many victims are left so malnourished and emotionally scarred that they struggle to reintegrate into normal life.
QNET, a global lifestyle and wellness marketing firm reportedly linked to the scam, has been banned from operating in Ghana since 2022 following allegations of running a Ponzi scheme. The company, however, has consistently denied any involvement in fraudulent activity.
Cases of young people being lured with fake job offers and ending up entangled in internet fraud operations are becoming increasingly common in both Ghana and Nigeria. Police say investigations are ongoing to apprehend all those responsible for the scam.
