Akwa Ibom’s Fight Against Human Trafficking Intensifies With Latest NAPTIP Arrest
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has apprehended a suspect linked to organ harvesting in Akwa Ibom State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Awhen, represented by the Head of Public Enlightenment, Eme Ukpabio, explained that while the suspect was arrested in Akwa Ibom, they are not from the state and the case will be transferred to the relevant authorities.
The agency also reported securing over 60 convictions, with 15 cases pending in federal courts.
Awhen further highlighted that organ harvesting has become a concerning trend in the state, revealing that some clinics and hospitals are involved in the illicit trade.
Ambassador Peace Edem, Coordinator of the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour, stressed the importance of ongoing community education on human trafficking, pointing out the significant psychological and emotional toll on victims.
Mrs. Eno Ime Akpan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, praised NAPTIP’s collaborative efforts and commended the state government’s initiative to combat trafficking.
Emmanuel Awhen, NAPTIP’s State Zonal Coordinator, disclosed the arrest during a press conference in Uyo on Saturday, marking the 2025 National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, themed “Strengthening Communities by Connecting the Dots.
