Supreme Showdown: Birthright, Pornography, and Voter Rights Cases Rock America’s Highest Court
As the U.S. Supreme Court wraps up its term ahead of the summer recess, several high-stakes cases remain undecided, with opinions expected to be delivered on Thursday. Among the most anticipated are:....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At the heart of this case is former President Donald Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship—but the legal focus lies elsewhere: on whether federal judges can impose nationwide injunctions on presidential actions.
This ruling is likely to be the most consequential of the term, as it could significantly alter the judiciary’s power to check executive authority.
Trump’s executive order halting automatic citizenship for children born on U.S. soil was blocked by district courts in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington on constitutional grounds. The Supreme Court will now determine whether such injunctions should apply nationwide or only to the plaintiffs and jurisdictions involved.
Regardless of the outcome, the broader question of Trump’s legal ability to revoke birthright citizenship is expected to return to the court in the near future.
– Pornography Age Verification Law –
In Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, the court is reviewing a Texas law mandating age verification for access to adult websites—part of a wider push to prevent minors from viewing explicit online content.
Critics argue the law infringes on First Amendment rights by limiting adult access to constitutionally protected material. A district court initially struck down the law, siding with the adult entertainment trade group Free Speech Coalition.
However, a conservative appeals court reversed that decision, prompting the group to escalate the case to the Supreme Court—now dominated by a 6–3 conservative majority.
– LGBTQ Books in Public Schools –
This case centers on whether religious parents can withdraw their children from Maryland public school classes that include LGBTQ-themed books promoting inclusivity and anti-discrimination.
Initially, parents were allowed to opt out of such content, but the school district later revoked that option. A coalition of Christian and Muslim parents filed suit, claiming the decision violates their First Amendment rights and religious freedoms.
However, existing legal precedent suggests that merely exposing students to diverse ideas—without requiring agreement or participation—does not amount to religious coercion.
– Planned Parenthood Medicaid Funding –
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, a Republican, issued an executive order in 2018 that barred Medicaid reimbursements to the state’s two Planned Parenthood clinics for services provided to low-income patients.
The case questions whether states have the authority to defund Planned Parenthood from Medicaid programs based on political or ideological grounds, potentially reshaping access to reproductive health services for millions of Americans.
