Parts of southeast Morocco, including the desert city of Errachidia, received nearly 8 inches of rainfall in some areas, with Errachidia alone getting 3 inches—more than four times its typical monthly average. The sudden downpour created temporary lakes and transformed the arid landscape, with particularly stunning scenes in the desert town of Merzouga.

The rain also refilled dry lakes, such as those in Iriqui National Park, with satellite images revealing newly formed lakes throughout the northwestern Sahara. While the flooding brought some remarkable natural changes, it also caused deadly floods in nearby Moroccan towns and villages, claiming more than a dozen lives.

The unusual event is being linked to climate change, with experts suggesting that the warming planet could lead to more extreme weather events in the desert.
