Deadly Crash in Lagos: Truck Crushes Minibus, One Dead, Three Rescued
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that a fully-loaded 40-foot Mack container truck (registration number MUS 729 XY) crushed a commercial minibus, popularly known as ‘Korope’, in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025. The accident occurred along Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo, as the vehicles were heading toward Iyana Ipaja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The tragic incident occurred due to brake failure on a fully loaded 40-foot container truck, causing the driver to lose control. The truck veered off course, tilted sideways, and collapsed onto a commercial minibus—commonly called a ‘Korope’—resulting in the immediate death of the minibus driver.
In a swift and courageous response, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) stationed in the area quickly rescued three passengers—two women and a man—who escaped unhurt. The victims were immediately handed over to medical emergency personnel for evaluation and care.
The fallen truck blocked more than half of the arterial roadway, creating heavy traffic congestion that spilled over to connecting routes such as Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA officers rapidly implemented traffic control and diversion strategies to manage the situation and ease the gridlock.
Notably, the truck driver, who attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended by alert LASTMA personnel and handed over to officers from the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions, following due notification.
The rescue operation saw coordinated efforts from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit, the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS), the Nigeria Police, and LASTMA, who worked together to clear the scene, recover the victim’s body, and restore order.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
He used the moment to issue a stern warning to truck operators, urging strict compliance with safety standards and mechanical checks—particularly brake systems—before setting out on the roads.
“Truck operators must follow safety protocols without compromise. Thorough mechanical inspections are mandatory, especially for braking systems. This preventable tragedy highlights the urgent need for full compliance,” Giwa stated.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing traffic safety regulations, strengthening emergency response mechanisms, and ensuring all vehicles meet roadworthiness standards to prevent further avoidable losses.
