Army Chief Drops Bombshell: ‘Treat Insurgents as Enemies, Not Victims!’”
Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has urged journalists and media professionals across the country to regard insurgents as shared enemies of the Nigerian people.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He made the call during a media chat organised by the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs, held on Saturday in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold U. Chibuisi, the Chief of Army Staff emphasised that insurgents should not be viewed as opponents of the military alone, but as enemies of the Nigerian state, and urged journalists to frame their reporting accordingly.
He noted that the work of defence and crime correspondents has a significant impact on military operations and can influence the outcome of counterinsurgency efforts, particularly in communities under threat from terrorists.
Responding to questions following two lectures delivered by retired Colonel T.O. Antigha and Dr. (Mrs.) Christiana Ade-Johnson, Head of the Mass Communication Department at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Major General Chibuisi reaffirmed the military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The event, themed “Military-Media Collaboration: Panacea for Enhanced National Security and Development,” drew over 100 journalists and media executives.
Chibuisi assured participants of the military’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the media in the fight against insurgency, adding that the armed forces are also intensifying internal surveillance to root out compromised personnel aiding terrorist groups.
He acknowledged that while some ex-insurgents have been reintegrated and closely monitored, the military remains vigilant to ensure their allegiance lies with national security.
“Any citizen, once pardoned by the appropriate authority, has the right to contribute to national security efforts. But if such a person is later found sabotaging the system, they will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.
Chibuisi further revealed that even within the regular force, some personnel have committed infractions—such as stealing ammunition from military armouries—and stressed that any act of betrayal, regardless of origin, will be punished in line with military regulations.
