President Bola Tinubu made the appeal during the 70th Anniversary Gala, Award Night, and Book Launch of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), held in Abuja on Saturday. Represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, President Tinubu served as the event’s Special Guest of Honour.

Highlighting his longstanding connection with the Nigerian press, Tinubu said no president in the country’s history shares a deeper bond with the media than he does.

He encouraged journalists to leverage their platforms in fostering national unity, trust, and the deepening of democratic values.

“As we celebrate 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the media must become the voice of our democratic victories — from institutional reforms and infrastructure development to active civic engagement and socio-economic progress,” he said.

He added that by highlighting these positive developments, the media not only honours the struggles that birthed Nigeria’s democracy but also strengthens national unity and public confidence in democratic institutions.

“In doing this, the media affirms its role as a crucial pillar in sustaining and advancing Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Tinubu stated.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom, stressing that a robust, ethical, and responsible media is vital to the country’s democratic stability.

He also disclosed that the government, in collaboration with UNESCO, is working to establish a Category-2 Institute for Media and Information Literacy in Abuja to promote professionalism and ethical journalism.

While recognising the media’s watchdog role, Tinubu expressed a willingness to collaborate with journalists in advancing peace, security, and national development.

“Hold us accountable — we welcome that. But also see us as partners in the shared task of delivering a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

President Tinubu congratulated the NUJ on reaching the 70-year milestone and praised the union for preserving its legacy through the commemorative book unveiled at the event.

“I firmly believe the media must take charge of its own narrative. If we don’t tell our story, no one else will,” he concluded.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
