Crisis to Comeback: Renowned Educationist Charts New Path for Nigeria’s Struggling Schools”
Dr. Richard Anietie, an educational economist and policy expert, has called for the adoption of entrepreneurial strategies in managing tertiary institutions to tackle persistent budget shortfalls.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in Uyo on Tuesday, Dr. Anietie expressed concern over the widening gap between rising demand for university education and the inadequate funding from federal and state governments, which he said continues to fall far below UNESCO’s recommended 15–20% allocation for education — often sinking beneath 7%.
He pointed to the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as a reflection of both growing educational demand and the pressure on Nigeria’s higher education system. “Out of the 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the UTME, only 4,756 scored 320 and above, while just 12,414 attained 300. More than half didn’t reach the 200 mark,” he noted.
“These figures expose a deeper crisis — one driven by an ever-growing population and stagnant funding. Nigeria is grappling with the dual challenge of expanding access to education while lacking the financial muscle to sustain it,” he added.
Citing Nigeria’s 2.5% annual population growth and projections that place the country as the world’s third most populous by 2050, Anietie warned that the burden on tertiary institutions will continue to escalate.
To address this, he urged university leadership to think beyond traditional administrative roles and embrace entrepreneurial models. “Our leaders must become innovators — building school-based enterprises, forging strategic partnerships, and engaging communities to supplement limited government funding,” he said.
Referencing his co-authored work on Principal’s Entrepreneurial Success Factors, Anietie stressed the need for leadership traits such as risk-taking, creativity, and strong decision-making within the education sector.
However, he argued that innovation alone is insufficient without also addressing educational attrition. “Many students drop out or withdraw early due to financial hardship. This is what I refer to as educational waste,” he said.
To mitigate this, Anietie advocated for the adoption of tailored educational insurance models. “In my 2019 study, I recommended context-specific policies like school fee insurance, family income assurance, and long-term disability coverage — tools that can protect students from financial shocks and help them complete their education,” he explained.
He concluded by calling for a holistic rethinking of how educational institutions are managed, urging decision-makers to blend entrepreneurship with social impact to ensure the sustainability of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
