Tensions Soar as Police Chief Orders Kano Governor’s Aide to Face Interrogation

Published

on

The political climate in Kano continues to heat up as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over his alleged involvement in the controversial suspension of APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a letter dated May 23, 2025, the IGP instructed the Kano State Government to release Dawakin-Tofa for questioning. According to the letter, the governor’s aide is under investigation for alleged criminal defamation, impersonation, and conduct capable of breaching public peace.

The summons, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, directed Dawakin-Tofa to report to SP Mojirode B. Obisiji at the Force Headquarters on May 29.

Sources reveal this isn’t the first time the media aide has been invited over the matter. In December 2024, he was similarly summoned by security agencies, a move that led to legal tensions between the Kano State Government and the Nigeria Police.

The feud between Ganduje and Dawakin-Tofa dates back to 2015 when Ganduje, then Governor-elect, allegedly ordered his arrest following political disagreements. Their rivalry deepened in 2024 when Ganduje was controversially suspended by ward executives in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area—an action the APC national leadership later nullified. Ganduje’s allies, however, accused Dawakin-Tofa of orchestrating the move to diminish Ganduje’s political influence.

Following the 2024 invitation, Dawakin-Tofa obtained a court injunction restraining the police, DSS, and Civil Defence from arresting or harassing him. Despite the court order, the latest police action suggests renewed intent to pursue the case. His legal team is currently appealing a Kano High Court ruling that dismissed his request for protection against arrest.

“We believe the Court of Appeal will uphold justice and grant the reliefs our client deserves,” a member of his legal team told Sunday Punch.

Political analysts view the escalating standoff as an early sign of the fierce battle ahead of the 2027 elections in Kano—one of northern Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
