The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to move beyond symbolic rhetoric and take concrete steps to address the injustice of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, warning that failure to act could further erode Nigeria’s democratic foundation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a letter dated June 14, 2025, signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the group called for the immediate establishment of a presidential panel of inquiry to investigate the annulment and identify those responsible for what it described as “a deliberate violation of Nigerians’ democratic rights.”

SERAP also urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to prosecute all individuals involved, irrespective of their political affiliations or current positions.

“Declarations of commitment are not enough unless backed by political will to end impunity for the June 12 annulment and uphold Nigerians’ democratic freedoms,” the group stated, adding that “no one is above the law, and there’s no statute of limitation on the violation of democratic rights.”

In its letter, SERAP further asked the President to sponsor an executive bill to amend the Electoral Act 2022, making electronic transmission of results mandatory and allowing every voter—not just litigants—access to election documents.

“Such reforms will ensure transparent, free, and fair elections, and help restore public trust in the electoral process,” the letter noted.

Additionally, the organisation called on Tinubu to drop all charges against peaceful protesters and reform laws that stifle free expression, including restrictive provisions in the Cybercrimes Act, Criminal Code, and Penal Code—specifically criminal defamation and injurious falsehood—which have reportedly been weaponised against journalists and dissenters.

“These laws are still being used to harass, arrest, and prosecute journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens for peacefully expressing their views,” SERAP warned.

While acknowledging President Tinubu’s Democracy Day address, where he reaffirmed his commitment to justice, freedom, and accountability, SERAP emphasized that real progress demands bold and measurable actions.

“Our demands are rooted in public interest and align with your Democracy Day pledges, the Nigerian Constitution, and Nigeria’s international human rights obligations,” the letter concluded.
