Public Outcry or Policy Shift? FG Abruptly Suspends Hunger Prayer Initiative

Published

on

Following public backlash, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has withdrawn its earlier directive mandating prayer and fasting sessions aimed at addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The ministry had previously issued an internal memo—dated June 11 and signed by Director of Human Resource Management, Mrs. Adedayo Modupe O.—calling on senior officials, including directors and value chain desk officers, to participate in a series of weekly spiritual gatherings titled “Divine Intervention for Protection and National Development.”

The sessions, which were scheduled for June 16, 23, and 30 at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, required all staff members to fast and attend the prayers, seeking divine guidance in support of the government’s efforts to curb food insecurity.

“This is to invite all staff of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food to a solemn prayer session for God’s guidance and support in achieving food security,” the memo had stated.

However, in a follow-up communication, the same director announced that the initiative had been postponed indefinitely. No official reason was provided for the sudden reversal.

The retraction comes amid intense criticism from the public, especially on social media, where many Nigerians questioned the logic of addressing a severe food crisis with religious gatherings instead of tangible policy actions.

Commentators argued that the ministry should focus on practical interventions—such as investing in agricultural infrastructure, providing subsidies to farmers, and improving food distribution networks—rather than resorting to symbolic gestures.

“Nigerians need real solutions, not prayer schedules,” one online user remarked, echoing a sentiment that has been widely shared.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
