The flood, caused by torrential rainfall, claimed nearly 200 lives, destroyed more than 50 houses, and displaced over 3,000 residents.
In response to the disaster, both public and private organisations, along with concerned Nigerians, have expressed their sympathy and offered financial and material support to the victims.
The Federal Government pledged ₦2 billion to aid in the relocation of displaced persons and reconstruction of affected homes. The Niger State Government contributed ₦1 billion, while Borno State donated ₦300 million. Additionally, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, offered ₦20 million in support.
Joining these efforts, the North South Power Foundation, based in Shiroro, donated food items worth millions of naira. The foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility consultant, Hassan Abdullahi, led a delegation to Minna, the state capital, for the presentation.
The donation included:
-
50 bags of 25kg rice
-
50 bags of 25kg beans
-
50 bags of 10kg semovita
-
50 cartons of spaghetti
-
50 bags of salt
-
50 cartons of Maggi
-
50 gallons of 5kg King’s oil
-
50 gallons of 5kg palm oil
Speaking during the handover, Abdullahi said:
“We are here to commiserate with the Niger State Government and the people of Mokwa over this unfortunate tragedy. In our modest way of showing solidarity, we’re donating these items to assist the victims. We also bring a letter from our Chief Operating Officer to the state government. We pray that such a disaster never occurs again in our lifetime.”
Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Suleiman, received the items on behalf of the government and expressed appreciation for the gesture.
“We have received these food items from the North South Power Foundation in response to the Mokwa flood incident. The relief materials will be delivered to the victims promptly. May Allah bless and uplift the foundation for their support,” Suleiman stated.
