Enugu on Edge: Angry Protesters March Over Bomb Unearthed in Residential Area
Residents of Ochima community in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State staged a peaceful protest following the discovery of a live explosive in their farmland—the second such incident in two years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The demonstrators, holding placards with messages such as “Nigerian Army should leave Ochima community alone” and “Government should come and rescue Ochima community from Nigerian Army”, attributed the recurring threat to military shooting drills carried out by the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division based in Enugu.
They voiced serious concerns over the proximity of the army’s shooting range to their homes, alleging that it has caused years of fear, trauma, property damage, injuries, and even deaths from stray bullets and explosives.
Addressing the press, President General of Ochima Town Union, Gerald Okwesili Ubaka, lamented the disruption to daily life, saying:
“We are protesting because our community is in danger. We can no longer live in peace. Bullets from the Nigerian Army’s shooting range frequently fall on our land. Farming and fetching water from our streams have become life-threatening.”
Ubaka recalled the tragic case of a female resident, Gloria, who was killed by a stray bullet during military exercises in February 2022. He also confirmed that the latest explosive find was promptly reported to the Ogbede Police Divisional Headquarters, which alerted the Police Anti-Bomb Squad in Enugu. The device was safely neutralized on May 10, 2025.
“Last year it was a bomb. This year again, another one. Our land is becoming a death zone for both residents and visitors,” Ubaka added.
Engr. Onyebuchi Otoboeze, the Senior Special Adviser on Works in the local government, validated the community’s fears and commended the council chairman for his swift intervention.
Meanwhile, Lawrence Igwe, the Station Catechist of Holy Child Catholic Church, Ochima, called on the government to urgently step in:
“We are pleading with the authorities to act now before more innocent lives are lost.”
