Senator Shuaib Salisu, representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, has voiced concern over the falling enrolment rate of schoolchildren in the region and called for urgent collaborative action to reverse the trend.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Salisu, who chairs the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, made the remarks on Monday during a two-day capacity-building and empowerment workshop for traditional rulers in Ogun State. The event, held at the Ake Palace in Abeokuta, was themed “The Role of Traditional Rulers in Ensuring Improved Enrolment of Students in Secondary Education”, and was organised in partnership with the National Secondary School Commission and other development stakeholders.

Describing education as the most enduring form of empowerment, the senator warned that the district’s long-standing academic reputation was at risk if the declining numbers were not addressed promptly.

He explained that traditional rulers were well-positioned to influence their communities and serve as champions of education advancement. “Our royal fathers are closer to the grassroots than any other arm of government. Their leadership is critical in restoring our educational values,” he said.

Highlighting Ogun Central’s historical contributions to national development—such as producing Nigeria’s first Chief Justice and first lawyer—Salisu lamented that the enthusiasm for education has significantly waned.

“If enrolment continues on this downward trend, we risk losing our prominence in the next decade or two,” he added, urging traditional leaders to help reignite the value of education in their communities.

In his remarks, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, affirmed that education is the cornerstone of societal progress. He encouraged traditional rulers to lead by example and commended Senator Salisu for recognising their potential to influence positive change.

Also speaking at the event, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, reiterated the importance of education in fighting poverty, ignorance, and inequality. He noted that despite various government interventions, many communities—particularly rural ones—still struggle with issues of enrolment, retention, and learning outcomes.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
