Speaking at the Final Interstate Forum on the Protection of Our Communities Initiative (POC), themed “Putting Words to Action – Sustainability and Future Directions 2024,” Maradun highlighted the establishment of the Community Protection Guards (CPG) and the Security Trust Fund (STF) by the state government to protect lives and property.
In a statement released from Gusau, the state capital, Maradun expressed gratitude to organizations like the Neem Foundation, KARUNA CENTER for Peacebuilding, and various local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) for their steadfast support.
She praised the Protecting Our Community Initiative (POCI) Project for being a source of hope in these difficult times, emphasizing its role in fostering dialogue, implementing Early Warning and Early Response Mechanisms, and broadcasting radio programs.
Maradun noted the project’s success in amplifying the voices of women and youth, particularly in addressing the farmer-herder conflicts, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to peace-building efforts.
Benue State’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hon. Aondowase Kunde, acknowledged the challenges posed by the influx of Internally Displaced Persons due to ongoing violence, and commended the POC project’s role in promoting peaceful coexistence.
Alhaji Musa Umar, Executive Director of the Voluntary Aid Initiative (VAI), a Zamfara-based CSO, emphasized that the POC project seeks innovative conflict resolution methods by leveraging the insights of women and youth to enhance civilian security through Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) systems.
