Sunderland are back in the Premier League after an eight-year absence, following a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Late goals from Eliezer Mayenda and Tommy Watson overturned a first-half deficit, sealing a sensational win for Regis Le Bris’ men and earning promotion worth an estimated £200 million ($270 million) in revenue.

Sheffield United had taken the lead in the 25th minute through Tyrese Campbell, who finished clinically after a perfect through-ball from Ben Hamer, the league’s Player of the Year.

The Blades thought they had doubled their lead just minutes later, but Harrison Burrows’ goal was ruled out following a VAR check for offside.

Sunderland, who were largely second-best for much of the match, stayed alive thanks to some heroic saves from goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, including a critical stop from Andre Brooks in the second half.

The turning point came in the 76th minute when Patrick Roberts picked out Mayenda, who blasted a shot into the roof of the net to draw the Black Cats level.

With the match seemingly heading into extra time, substitute Tommy Watson pounced on a loose pass and curled home a stoppage-time winner, sending the Sunderland end into delirium.

Watson, 19, is set to join Brighton in the upcoming transfer window, and his final act for Sunderland was nothing short of fairytale.

“It’s unbelievable. The story was written when I came off the bench. I couldn’t have pictured it any better,” said Watson after the match.
“We’ll see each other next year, in the big time!”

Sunderland’s remarkable run to promotion caps off a revival from a team that spent four years in England’s third tier. They had lost five consecutive games leading into the play-offs but showed resilience throughout.

The victory also ended Sheffield United’s long Wembley curse, having now failed in ten attempts to gain promotion via the play-offs.

Sunderland’s return to the top flight sets up a fiery renewal of their storied rivalry with Newcastle United in the upcoming Premier League season.
