ASUU Threatens Fresh Nationwide Strike Over Stalled 2009 Agreement
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning of an impending nationwide strike if urgent action is not taken to implement the long-standing 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, voiced the union’s growing frustration over the government’s continued neglect of nine key issues, which have stifled progress in Nigeria’s public universities for years.
Piwuna specifically cited:
-
The non-renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, pending since 2017,
-
Withheld salaries from the 2022 strike,
-
Unpaid entitlements linked to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS),
-
Delayed release of revitalisation funds,
-
Unpaid earned academic allowances,
-
And neglect of ASUU members in state universities, such as Kogi State University and Lagos State University, who face issues like victimisation and job insecurity.
According to ASUU, the government also reneged on its pledge to invest ₦150 billion into the university system and adjust irregular allowances by 2026.
Beyond financial grievances, the union raised alarms over growing political interference in university governance, pointing to contentious leadership appointments at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the University of Abuja, which Piwuna says compromise institutional integrity.
“Our universities should be centres for solutions to national challenges. We are open to dialogue but will not tolerate further erosion of our rights,” Piwuna asserted.
Calling for a “national rebirth through education,” he urged the government to convene an education summit to tackle core issues like funding, university autonomy, and staff welfare.
While ASUU remains open to negotiations, the leadership has made it clear that a strike is imminent if meaningful progress is not made swiftly.
