Oyo State Government Links WASSCE Student’s Death to Father Driving Against Traffic

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Governor Seyi Makinde’s media aide, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, revealed that the incident occurred after the student’s father was driving against the flow of traffic. The situation took place early in the morning while the father was in a tinted black Honda Accord, with license plate number FST 639 JU, on the Alakia Old Road.
The government labeled the event as “sad, shocking, and painful,” noting that it could have been avoided. It further clarified that the incident unfolded when officials from the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), working in collaboration with the police, were conducting a traffic operation in response to persistent complaints about dangerous one-way driving in the area, which had led to numerous accidents and fatalities.
During the operation, as OYRTMA officials attempted to halt the driver’s illegal action, a police officer, who is currently under investigation, reportedly fired at one of the car’s tires. The shot missed and hit the student instead.
The state government urged residents to remain calm while both the police and government officials investigate the situation. It also warned against violating traffic laws, emphasizing that such incidents must be avoided in the future.
The Oyo State government has vowed to ensure justice is served and is taking necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of this devastating tragedy.

In a post on social media, Showunmi said Atiku’s political strength and preparedness give him an advantage in the emerging contest, while noting that former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi could emerge as his strongest rival.
He also observed growing political dissatisfaction across parts of the country, particularly in the North, saying both rural and urban voters are increasingly aggrieved.
According to him, these sentiments could significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
Showunmi warned political actors against neglecting loyal supporters, noting that shifting alliances could reshape the political landscape ahead of the polls.
He further described Atiku as fully committed and actively preparing for the race.
Highlighting key regions to watch, he said the South-East may play a decisive role, while the South-West remains unpredictable, and the North-Central could serve as a critical swing zone in the election.
