The Oyo State House of Assembly has condemned the tragic death of a secondary school student who was killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer in Ibadan, the state capital. Describing the incident as “painful and unwarranted,” the Assembly on Tuesday vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served.
The issue was raised in the Assembly by Deputy Leader Olasunkanmi Babalola, who highlighted that the fatal shooting occurred on May 20, 2025, when a police officer fired live ammunition while pursuing a suspect along Gbagi Market Road. The bullet struck and killed the student, who was on his way to an examination centre to sit for his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The Assembly expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the deceased student’s family and the Ibadan community. In the wake of the tragedy, lawmakers have called for the immediate commencement of a thorough investigation by the state’s Commissioner of Police to identify the officer responsible and ensure appropriate legal action.
The Assembly further resolved to offer psychological support and financial compensation to the grieving family, providing assistance to help them cope with their loss. The lawmakers also urged the Ministry of Information and Orientation to launch a statewide campaign to raise awareness on citizens’ rights and police conduct.
In response to the incident, an eight-member committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, has been tasked with visiting the Oyo State Commissioner of Police on Thursday. The committee will report back to the Assembly on the progress of the investigation. Additionally, the Assembly has called on the Inspector General of Police to issue clearer directives on the use of firearms in public spaces and ensure police officers are properly trained in handling public safety matters.
