OPINION: Julius Ihonvbere Is the Face of Owan’s Political Betrayal

I write this not out of hatred, but out of deep anger — the kind that brews when you watch a man use your people as a ladder to rise, then yank it away once he’s climbed high enough.
Let me speak plainly: Hon. Prof. Julius Ihonvbere is a disappointment. A man who should have been Owan’s pride has become its most dangerous illusion.
For years, we watched him gather titles like souvenirs — Special Adviser to President Obasanjo, Secretary to the Edo State Government, Member of the House of Representatives, Chairman of House Committees, and now Majority Leader of the 10th National Assembly.
And yet, with all these heavyweight positions, what has Prof. Julius Ihonvbere truly done for the people of Owan?
Let’s talk facts.
Billions in Constituency Allowance — Where Did It Go?
Between 2019 and now, Ihonvbere has reportedly received billions in constituency project funds. That’s not hearsay — it’s public record. Funds meant for schools, health centers, road rehabilitation, water access, skills training, and youth empowerment.
But travel across Owan East and West, and you’ll find zero visibility of any such projects. Not a single modern school block. No solar-powered boreholes. No empowerment centers. Not even basic market stalls or equipment for petty traders.
Where did the money go?
A One-Man Political Machinery
The tragedy of Julius Ihonvbere’s leadership isn’t just what he failed to do — it’s what he refused to allow others to do.
Every opportunity that could have birthed the next generation of Owan leaders was swallowed by his tight grip. His brand of politics rewards loyalty to him — not loyalty to the people.
While other lawmakers build political families, Ihonvbere builds silence around himself. No visible protégé. No empowered youth leader. No traceable success story. Just him. Always him.
Owan Must Wake Up
A man who has touched every rung of political power but cannot point to one signature project in his own community does not deserve another chance.
It is time we stopped celebrating empty portfolios.
It is time we stopped mistaking longevity for legacy.
And most of all, it is time we held Prof. Julius Ihonvbere accountable for the great waste of potential he has become.
The next generation of Owan voters will not be swayed by grammar or empty press statements. We want results. We want representation. We want leaders who serve — not those who vanish.
