This announcement was made by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, during the seventh 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday. Lawal explained that the initiative, implemented under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, is designed to support the entire agricultural value chain — from production to marketing — in Nigeria’s northern regions.
The minister outlined that the ACReSAL project, a collaborative effort between the Federal Government and the World Bank, targets climate change issues affecting 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. It is overseen by a multi-agency steering committee comprising the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture, and other key stakeholders.
Among its achievements, the project has restored 178,235 hectares of degraded land and funded community development projects. The Community Revolving Fund, in particular, has empowered nearly 10,000 beneficiaries — including 4,251 women — to engage in on-farm and off-farm enterprises.
To combat forest crimes and protect wildlife, the project also equipped the National Park Service with 11 patrol vehicles and constructed six ranger posts across various parks. Lawal noted that more than 1 million individuals have directly benefited from ACReSAL’s interventions, while an estimated 13 million have been reached indirectly.
In a bid to improve mechanized farming, ACReSAL has distributed 245 tractors and 1,450 hand tillers to 56,873 farmers across the participating states. These efforts have been complemented by the provision of drought-resistant seeds, organic fertilizers, solar irrigation systems, and other farming inputs to Community Interest Groups.
Additionally, a significant data collaboration has been launched between ACReSAL and the National Bureau of Statistics to conduct Nigeria’s largest-ever agricultural survey under the global 50×2030 Initiative. This aims to bridge crucial data gaps in the sector and inform evidence-based policy decisions.
