Pressure Mounts On Tinubu To Remove Defence Minister Matawalle Following Badaru’s Exit.
There is growing political pressure on President Bola Tinubu to remove Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, following the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to informed sources, the United States reportedly requested the removal of both Badaru and Matawalle as a precondition for any security collaboration with Nigeria in tackling terrorism and banditry. A senior government official indicated that expectations of strengthened security cooperation may be jeopardized if changes in the defence leadership are not implemented.
The official said, “There is pressure on Tinubu to remove Matawalle as well. We were informed that the US insisted that both Badaru and Matawalle be replaced before any cooperation with Nigeria could move forward.”
On Monday evening, former Defence Chief Christopher Musa held a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, marking his first public engagement with the Presidency since retiring from military service on October 24, 2025. Presidency insiders revealed that Musa was informed he would take over the defence portfolio, succeeding Badaru.
Badaru officially tendered his resignation in a December 1, 2025 letter to President Tinubu, citing health reasons. The President accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service, according to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. Onanuga also confirmed that the name of Badaru’s successor will soon be submitted to the Senate for confirmation, with formal communication expected before the week ends.
