“Italy’s Bold Move: PM Unveils Game-Changing Plan to Supercharge African Economies at EU Summit”

Published

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will host European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Rome on Friday for a summit focused on revitalizing African economies, a strategy aimed at curbing irregular migration into the European Union.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, has made tackling illegal immigration a central priority. She has unveiled a €5.5 billion ($6.3 billion) initiative targeting 14 African countries—including Ethiopia, Senegal, and Ivory Coast—intended to boost sectors such as energy and healthcare.

According to the EU border agency Frontex, detections of irregular border crossings into the EU dropped to 239,000 in 2024, a 38% decline from a near-decade high recorded in 2023.

The Italian-led initiative seeks to deepen trade ties—especially in the energy sector—with African nations, as Rome scrambles to secure alternative energy sources following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Italy is also eyeing investment in strategic infrastructure, such as financing a railway project between Zambia and Angola and committing €65 million toward biofuel production in Kenya.

Kenyan President William Ruto welcomed the plan as “ambitious” but cautioned that investments alone won’t solve Africa’s economic challenges, citing persistent debt burdens. Similarly, African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed skepticism, warning that Africa “cannot continue to rely on promises that are frequently broken.”

Analysts have raised doubts about the scale and effectiveness of Italy’s plan. Giovanni Carbone, head of the Africa program at the University of Milan, said the funding falls short of what is needed to generate substantial job growth capable of reducing migration.

Simone Ogno of the NGO ReCommon criticized the initiative as primarily serving the interests of large Italian fossil fuel corporations. Notable Italian firms involved in the plan include energy giant Eni, electricity grid operator Terna, and agricultural conglomerate Bonifiche Ferraresi.

Meanwhile, undocumented migration via the Central Mediterranean route—from North Africa to Italy—saw approximately 67,000 arrivals in 2024, representing a 59% decrease compared to the previous year, according to Frontex.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
