FCT Doctors Begin 3-Day Strike, Demand Immediate Action from Wike

Published

on

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has launched a three-day warning strike starting on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in protest of the recent dismissal of 127 health workers by the FCT Civil Service Commission. This action follows an emergency congress meeting held by the doctors on Monday at the Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement, Dr. George Ebong, the president of the FCT Association of Resident Doctors, described the dismissals as inhumane and unlawful, especially since the affected health workers were not properly consulted. These workers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists, were wrongly categorized as “ghost workers,” despite being active members of staff.

The strike follows the unilateral decision of the FCT Civil Service Commission under the leadership of Emeka Ezeh to fire the workers without prior notice. The workers’ April salaries were also withheld. Dr. Ebong demanded the immediate reinstatement of the affected workers, the payment of their salaries, and the resignation of Emeka Ezeh.

The doctors have warned that if their demands are not addressed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike within three days, they will escalate the strike to an indefinite closure of hospitals in the capital.

“We are deeply angered by such an insensitive and unjust decision. These health workers have been crucial to the operation of our hospitals, and their dismissal has severely impacted the healthcare system. If nothing is done by Friday, May 9, we will take further action,” said Dr. Ebong.

The strike is a direct response to unilateral actions taken by the FCT administration, highlighting the growing tension in the healthcare sector over worker treatment and rights.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
