Diphtheria Strikes Again: Two Children Die in Kaduna Amid Renewed Outbreak
A renewed outbreak of diphtheria has claimed the lives of two children in the Tukur-Tukur community of Zaria Local Government Area in Kaduna State, raising serious concerns about the state of public health in the region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Confirming the incident, Abdulazeez Suleiman, a community leader and Director with the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), expressed deep concern over the recurrence of the disease. He revealed that the children succumbed within 48 hours of showing symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and extreme fatigue.
Suleiman emphasized that the latest outbreak echoes a similar crisis that recently struck the community, which led to four fatalities before it was contained through interventions by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. He warned that the recurring outbreaks expose systemic weaknesses in vaccination coverage, public awareness, and healthcare access.
He urged parents to collaborate with health professionals by recognizing the importance of immunization and seeking immediate medical care when symptoms of diphtheria or other communicable diseases appear.
He further called for a rapid and coordinated response by health authorities, including the deployment of medical personnel, the provision of vaccines, and the initiation of public awareness campaigns. According to him, equipping local facilities to manage outbreaks is crucial in preventing further casualties.
Suleiman advocated enhanced partnerships between local health agencies, global bodies such as WHO and UNICEF, and community stakeholders to effectively tackle the crisis. He stressed the need for stronger healthcare infrastructure in underserved areas, improved vaccine availability, and better disease surveillance.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of training healthcare workers in disease detection and treatment, which he believes is critical to breaking the cycle of preventable outbreaks like diphtheria in Kaduna and beyond.
