The court found the two men guilty of crimes committed on May 29, 2020, at Oni Edozien Street, off Ezenei Avenue, Asaba. The prosecution, led by Mrs. Esther Azomani of the State Ministry of Justice, presented evidence showing that Mohammed and Bawa, along with two accomplices who remain at large, used a tricycle (Keke) to rob Ifeanyi Okafor of his mobile phones.
During the robbery, Okafor was stabbed in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries. The stolen phones were sold to a third defendant, Daniel Joseph, for N6,000. The police traced the phones to Joseph, who then provided information leading to the arrest of Mohammed and Bawa.
Justice Onome Marshall-Umukoro, who presided over the case, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case against Mohammed and Bawa beyond reasonable doubt. As a result, both men were convicted and sentenced to death.
The court, however, found insufficient evidence against Joseph for the charge of receiving stolen property. Consequently, he was discharged and acquitted of all charges.
