Constitution Ignored, Mandates Betrayed – Momodu Condemns Political Carpet-Crossing
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against interpreting the increasing wave of political defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a mark of success.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a broadcast interview on Soni Irabor Live, aired on News Central on Saturday, Momodu voiced concern over the erosion of political ideology in Nigeria, asserting that party-hopping has contributed to public disillusionment and deepened national hardship.
He urged that defections should be evaluated not by numbers but by substance, asking, “What has the new party done for the people that justifies the switch?” He warned that political movements lacking ideological depth only serve to confuse and mislead the public.
Highlighting the widespread economic suffering in the country, Momodu said, “Everywhere you turn, Nigerians are crying. I hope the president is hearing the real voices on the streets and taking criticism in good faith.”
He expressed concern that the president may be detached from grassroots realities, and that the sight of numerous governors and officials defecting to APC might wrongly reassure Tinubu of his administration’s performance.
“With this level of mass defection, one might assume everything is fine, but the truth is far from it,” Momodu remarked, adding that the president could be misled by these political moves into believing he enjoys overwhelming public support.
On the legal aspect, Momodu criticized the repeated violations of constitutional provisions, particularly those requiring elected officials to relinquish their seats upon switching parties.
“We’ve practically abandoned the constitution. If a politician defects, the honourable thing is to step down from the position won under their former party’s platform,” he said.
The veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine also lamented the unchecked nature of party-switching in Nigerian politics, saying, “You can wake up as an APC member and go to bed in PDP, only to return to APC the next morning. It’s a mockery of the system.”
He emphasized that political parties, not individuals, should control who holds elective offices, warning that the current trend is undermining democracy.
