Presidency, INEC Deny Rumors of Mahmood Yakubu’s Sack

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian presidency have strongly denied widespread rumors claiming that President Bola Tinubu has sacked INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The false claim, which originated from a viral message circulated via WhatsApp, alleged that Tinubu had replaced Yakubu with a certain Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.

Addressing the misinformation, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, told Vanguard Newspaper, “Please, disregard. It is not true.”

Additionally, President Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, took to (formerly Twitter) to discredit the report, labeling it as “fake news.” He emphasized that any genuine announcement of such importance would only come through official government channels, such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

In further clarification, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, also rejected the claim on social media. “The story trending across media platforms suggesting that the President has either sacked or replaced the INEC chairman is false and should be ignored,” he stated.

He added that official decisions of the President are communicated through proper channels and not via rumor or social media speculation.

This clarification comes as INEC continues preparations for upcoming elections, including the local government polls in Rivers State, for which the voters register was recently released.
