Akpabio Fires Back At Critics Over Alleged Incomplete Electoral Act Process.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized Nigerians who are condemning the Senate over the Electoral Act Amendment, describing such criticism as premature.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the public presentation of the book “The Burden of Legislators in Nigeria” by Senator Effiong Bob, held at the NAF Centre, Abuja, on Saturday, Akpabio stressed that the Senate will not be intimidated and is committed to delivering an Electoral Act that strengthens democracy.
He noted that the controversy surrounding Section 60(3) of the Electoral Act is unnecessary, as the amendment process is still ongoing and far from complete.
Akpabio said, “We have not yet passed the votes and proceedings; harmonization is still ongoing, yet people are already appearing on television panels criticizing the Senate for something that is unfinished.
“We cannot finalize anything until the votes and proceedings are reviewed. Once released, any senator can propose amendments. Why attack the Senate when the process is incomplete?”
He added, “I cannot comment until the process is formally concluded. Meanwhile, people are setting up panels on TV stations and unfairly targeting us—I leave them to God.
“We will not be intimidated; our focus is to do what is right for Nigeria, not to cater to one NGO. Retreats and meetings are not lawmaking. Just because a position is agreed upon in Lagos does not mean it must be approved in full. I want to make it clear that there is no ambiguity in this matter.”
Regarding the plenary discussions, Akpabio explained, “We suggested removing the words ‘real-time’ to allow INEC the flexibility to determine the mode of result transmission. Making it mandatory could cause serious problems if the system fails.
“The door remains open for ADC, APP, and other parties to propose adjustments. The conference committee and the votes and proceedings must be approved before any amendment is finalized.
“‘Real-time’ would mean no results in states without network access or areas experiencing grid failures, effectively halting elections. Technology should safeguard, not jeopardize, democracy. Passing a law that mandates real-time results in places without electricity is impractical.”
