Air Peace Under Fire as Passengers Sleep Overnight at Abuja Airport After Mass Cancellations
Scores of passengers were left stranded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday night following the sudden cancellation of several Air Peace flights. The affected travellers, which included children, expatriates, and entire families, spent the night in the terminal, forced to sleep on hard metal chairs with no alternative arrangements provided.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Visuals obtained by PUNCH Online revealed distressed passengers expressing frustration—some standing in protest, others sitting in visible exhaustion. The cancellations are part of a recent pattern that has seen the airline clash with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which has warned Air Peace to address its growing operational disruptions.
Air Peace maintains that the cancellations are safety-related and taken in the interest of passengers, despite ongoing public backlash.
Among the stranded was Dr. Kunle Ashimi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State. He recounted how his 6:00 pm flight was first delayed to 8:00 pm, only for passengers to wait until past 3:00 am before finally departing for Lagos. Dr. Ashimi highlighted the double standard in the aviation sector, where late passengers are penalised, but airlines often escape accountability.
He also noted the emotional and financial toll caused by the delay, citing missed appointments and lost hotel bookings. One expatriate reportedly missed a rare international connecting flight due to the chaos. In another case, a nursing mother named Adetoun lamented having to keep her child overnight in an unsafe airport environment despite needing to attend a doctor’s appointment in Lagos early the next morning.
Eventually, an Air Peace aircraft departed around 3:15 am and arrived in Lagos at 4:10 am.
Efforts to reach the airline’s spokesperson, Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not returned.
In a separate statement, Air Peace reiterated its stance, saying safety remains its core operational principle. It explained that delays and cancellations are non-negotiable when safety thresholds—relating to weather, technical, or logistical factors—are not met. The airline also addressed allegations from the NCAA, asserting that its route management is aligned with available aircraft and not driven by profit motives.
Despite this, the frustration from passengers continues to mount, with calls for stricter regulatory action and improved accountability in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
