UNIPORT Student’s Death Sparks Outrage as Family Alleges Police Cover-Up

Francis Akpakpan, the deceased’s brother, told PUNCH Metro that Godwin had visited his lounge on April 16 to watch a football match but failed to return home afterward. After unsuccessful attempts to contact him by phone, a man identifying as a police officer answered the next day, informing the family that Godwin had been shot by a soldier.
According to Francis, the police initially denied the family access to an official report and delayed giving clear information, even when accompanied by a lawyer. When eventually shown a minibus allegedly shot at by military officers, they were told the body had been taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital by the anti-cultism unit.
However, upon viewing the body, the family observed injuries inconsistent with the narrative provided—specifically, two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and signs of physical assault. These discrepancies raised their suspicions.
Francis recounted attempts to further probe the circumstances, which were met with threats from an Investigating Police Officer (IPO), who warned them against pursuing the matter, claiming military personnel might also target them.
He said, “The IPO later took us to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Dragon Base, but had private discussions with officers before allowing only two of us to view the body. When I continued my own inquiry, I discovered that the location he initially gave us did not match the supposed site of the shooting. Also, there was no military checkpoint at the scene we visited.”
The police’s version, however, suggested that Godwin was an unintended casualty. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko said officers stopped a vehicle during a search operation and found Indian hemp. On the way to the station, they encountered an altercation between civilians and military personnel. In the chaos, soldiers allegedly fired shots at the vehicle, one of which struck the student.
She confirmed that the command had written to military authorities and promised a full investigation. “We are committed to ensuring justice is served,” she added.
Meanwhile, civil society group Take It Back Movement has demanded an independent probe. In a statement, Rivers coordinator King Amanyie called Godwin’s death a gross human rights violation, urging authorities to identify and prosecute all involved.
