Bayelsa Lawmaker Demands Full Probe After Women Abducted in Boat Ambush

Among those demanding answers is Hon. Selekaye Victor-Ben, a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 4. As Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Human Rights, he condemned the attack and pointed to glaring security failures along the state’s waterways.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when gunmen intercepted a boat transporting 12 women traders from the Swali Ultra Modern Market in Yenagoa to Southern Ijaw communities. All the passengers were reportedly robbed, and four women were taken to an undisclosed location.
Describing the abduction as “a cowardly and calculated assault on innocent citizens,” Victor-Ben called for a formal investigation to identify the security lapses that allowed the attack to happen in broad daylight.
He questioned the effectiveness of existing security structures, including the Waterways Security Task Force and Marine Police, and asked why there was no surveillance or patrol presence on such a vulnerable route.
“If these systems failed, the public deserves to know why. If they were never deployed, someone must be held accountable,” the lawmaker said.
Victor-Ben urged both the state government and security agencies to act swiftly to locate and rescue the victims while ensuring the perpetrators are brought to justice.
He added that inaction would only deepen public distrust in the state’s ability to protect its citizens.
Other residents, including traders and boat operators, voiced similar frustrations, warning that the attack is part of a disturbing trend of insecurity in the area.
When contacted for a statement, SP Musa Mohammed, spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, said he had not yet been briefed on the incident.
