Funke Akindele Eyes Political Comeback, Says ‘I’ll Do It Again’

Akindele, who served as the deputy governorship candidate to Abdulazeez ‘Jandor’ Adediran under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was defeated by incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following the election, she withdrew from public political discourse and removed campaign-related content from her social media platforms, fueling speculation about her future in the political space.

Speaking during a live edition of the “WithChude” podcast, Akindele ended the suspense, confirming that her political journey is not over. “I’ll do it again,” she declared.

She explained that her motivation for entering politics stemmed from a desire to contribute meaningfully to society. “I felt the need to support and give back,” she said. Akindele added that witnessing the strength and influence of female political figures like Abike Dabiri inspired her confidence to get involved.

Reflecting on her experience, the actress said it shaped her courage and broadened her understanding of governance and civic responsibility. “Politics taught me to overcome fear. I learned to speak with facts and figures and gained significant knowledge in the process,” she noted.

Known widely for her lead role in Jenifa’s Diary, Akindele remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Her entry into politics in 2022 was widely praised as a courageous step that could pave the way for increased youth and women participation in leadership roles.
