Published

As Gombe State enters the month of May, farmers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the rains, which are expected to mark the beginning of the planting season.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Many farmers in Gombe have expressed their readiness to commence early planting, aligning with forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which presented the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction on February 4, 2025. This prediction included a forecasted rainy season onset for the state, with rainfall expected to begin in Shongom on May 27 and in Nafada by June 17.

NiMet also predicted a below-average annual rainfall, ranging from 606 mm to 789 mm across different regions. In addition, it was expected that the rainy season would last between 107 and 140 days, with some areas, like Nafada, experiencing a dry spell of up to 21 days from June to August 2025.

Lydia Simon Bawa, the Climate Change Desk Officer, emphasized that farmers should carefully monitor the predicted onset dates before initiating planting. For regions with shorter growing seasons, she advised farmers to plant early and use early-maturing crop varieties. Those in areas where rainfall is expected to be delayed should consider drought-resistant crops.

Bawa also provided guidance on various preventive measures, such as maintaining clear drainage systems and encouraging water harvesting for use during dry spells. She cautioned against practices like dumping waste in drainage systems and urged proper maintenance of vegetation that could serve as windbreakers and erosion control.

Farmers in the state are urged to prepare in advance to optimize the planting season and ensure their crops are protected from potential adverse weather conditions.

FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Demands.

Published

on

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union also directed parents and guardians to keep their children at home until further notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns and what it described as government inaction.

This followed a communiqué issued after an emergency SWEC meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, over the weekend and signed by the state leadership of the union.

Teachers were instructed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions from the union leadership, as the industrial action remains in force until their demands are addressed.

According to the communiqué, the strike became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which elapsed without a satisfactory response.

The union recalled that although previous interventions led to the suspension of an earlier strike, several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare were still unresolved.

It also expressed concern that a committee set up to address outstanding entitlements submitted its report in August 2025, but the findings have not been made public or implemented.

While acknowledging the payment of the new minimum wage and some salary arrears, the union insisted that major concerns remain unattended.

The NUT further demanded reforms in promotion processes and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.

After what it described as unsuccessful engagements and expired deadlines, the union declared that all teachers in the FCT will remain on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.
