Nigeria Customs Seizes N921bn in Contraband in 4-Month Crackdown at Apapa Port
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a significant enforcement success, announcing the seizure of contraband valued at over ₦921 billion at the Apapa Port between January and April 2025. Adeniyi revealed that customs operatives carried out 11 major interdiction operations within the four-month period, leading to the confiscation of banned items including expired food products, unregistered pharmaceuticals, and unauthorized high-grade surveillance equipment.
The seizures included five 40-foot containers, two 20-foot containers, and four large-scale deliveries of smuggled items. Among the most concerning were shipments of unapproved sexual enhancement drugs, expired margarine, and sophisticated drones lacking clearance from regulatory bodies.
Notably, the Service intercepted over 1,000 cartons of hydra-sildenafil citrate tablets and more than 1,400 unregistered pharmaceutical products. Many of these items were falsely declared under general merchandise or cosmetics in an attempt to evade detection.
In the area of national security, Customs impounded 60 combat drones, 53 helicopter drones, and various communication gadgets such as FM transceivers—all imported without end-user certifications required by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Adeniyi emphasized the growing threat of illegal pharmaceutical and technology imports, warning that substances like unregulated enhancement drugs could pose grave health risks, including cardiovascular complications. He highlighted five troubling trends enabling this illicit trade: mislabeled goods, bundled banned items, regulatory gaps in exporting countries, and the unauthorized influx of security-grade technologies.
The Customs chief also noted the phased implementation of the new Customs Unified Management Information System (B’Odogwu), currently in pilot testing at Tin Can Island and PTML terminals, aimed at digitizing operations for improved transparency and efficiency.
Commending the Apapa Command for its vigilance, Adeniyi reaffirmed the NCS’s intelligence-driven approach and collaboration with key agencies such as NAFDAC, NDLEA, and the NSA’s office. He urged the public to report suspicious activities and confirmed that hazardous containers had been secured in restricted zones to prevent public exposure.
