FCT Teachers’ Strike Crisis Deepens as Wike Threatens ‘Big Stick’ Approach

Published

on

The ongoing dispute over unpaid salary arrears for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) teachers has reached a critical juncture, with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike threatening decisive action against area council chairmen. The conflict stems from the non-implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage approved since 2019, affecting teachers across all six FCT area councils.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The current strike, which began in January 2024, marks the latest in a series of protests dating back to 2019. Teachers are demanding payment of 25 months’ minimum wage arrears, promotion arrears, and other outstanding entitlements. A recent protest saw workers block access to the FCTA Secretariat, carrying placards with messages like “Is it wrong to teach in primary school?”

Union leaders have made serious allegations against area council chairmen, claiming they diverted N4.1 billion approved by Wike to settle the arrears. The strike has created a healthcare crisis, with over 270 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) closed and only 130 nurses available to serve the entire FCT population.

Wike has summoned all area council chairmen to an emergency meeting while appealing for patience from the striking workers. “It’s unfortunate that after I approved money to pay teachers, the chairmen failed to do so,” Wike stated. “I don’t know why people don’t have conscience that these are teachers who take care of our children.”

The situation has drawn intervention from the National Assembly, with joint Senate/House committees meeting stakeholders on Tuesday. Meanwhile, parents across the FCT are feeling the impact, with public primary schools remaining closed as the third term academic session begins.

Parents like Moses John from Gwagwalada express frustration: “My children have shifted focus to other things, costing me additional unbudgeted funds. Government officials don’t feel this pain because their children are in private schools or abroad.”

As the standoff continues, all eyes remain on Wike’s promised “big stick” approach and whether it will finally resolve the protracted wage dispute affecting thousands of teachers and their students.

A Strong Endorsement for Donald Duke

  • Surpassing Competitors: Speaking during an interview, Baba-Ahmed confidently stated that, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke outperforms all other presidential contenders currently in the political space.

  • Integrity and Capability: He described Duke as part of a visionary leadership blueprint aimed at thinking critically, restoring national dignity, exhibiting true integrity, and offering young Nigerians a leadership style they can genuinely look up to.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions. The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
