The blasts, which reportedly began around 12:05 a.m., caused significant alarm as red flares illuminated the night sky and loud detonations echoed through nearby neighborhoods. The unsettling sound and visual disturbance forced many residents to flee their homes in panic.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the explosions appeared to originate from the armoury section within the military facility. A local resident, Rakiya Garba, who spoke to Punch, said although the incident was not accompanied by gunfire, the frequency and intensity of the blasts raised deep concern.

“We are safe but scared. The explosions are sporadic and clearly from within the barracks, not from an external attack,” Garba explained, noting that emergency services, including the fire department, had arrived swiftly on the scene.

Amid rising public anxiety, Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur addressed the situation, urging citizens to stay calm and avoid spreading misinformation. He confirmed that the explosions were the result of a fire outbreak in the Giwa Barracks armoury and dismissed circulating rumors suggesting a terrorist attack by Boko Haram.
