Akpabio Declares Innocence, Says Jailed INEC Officer’s Conviction Proves Election Was Rigged Against Him

Published

on

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly denied allegations that the jailed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official, Professor Peter Ogban, rigged the 2019 Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial election in his favour. Instead, he asserted that the electoral fraud committed by Ogban was aimed at manipulating the outcome against him and the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio described the reports linking him to the fraudulent conduct as baseless, misleading, and politically motivated. He argued that Ogban’s conviction by an Akwa Ibom High Court validates his earlier claim of being a victim of electoral malpractice.

The Senate President reiterated that Ogban, who was a Returning Officer during the February 23, 2019 election, did not declare him the winner. Rather, he allegedly nullified over 61,000 valid votes from Akpabio’s stronghold—Essien Udim Local Government Area—and announced his opponent as the victor. This, according to Akpabio, was in violation of the Electoral Act and led him to challenge the result in court.

The Court of Appeal later nullified the outcome of that election and ordered a rerun in Essien Udim LGA, further substantiating Akpabio’s claims. He emphasized that the ruling confirmed that the election had been “massively rigged” and that those spreading contrary narratives were simply continuing a “campaign of calumny.”

“It is absurd,” the statement said, “to suggest that someone who was responsible for cancelling valid votes cast for me was working in my interest.”

Akpabio expressed confidence that justice will eventually catch up with all those involved in the election manipulation, either through legal or divine means. He stated that he has since moved on with his political responsibilities and would not be deterred by “mischief makers and political detractors.”
