Garba, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Niger State and a familiar face at past May Day events, was conspicuously missing from this year’s ceremony held at the Trade Fair Complex. His absence marks a break from tradition, as he has been a consistent participant since assuming office as deputy governor.

While Governor Bago was present at the event, alongside Senator Sani Musa representing Niger East, Garba’s nonappearance has raised eyebrows. Some sources suggested that he was away on official assignment, but others believe his decision to stay away may have been calculated to avoid escalating existing tensions within the state’s leadership.

Reports from Leadership emphasize the symbolic weight of Garba’s absence, especially given his deep ties to the labour movement. Political observers see the development as further indication of ongoing friction, allegedly rooted in internal party disputes and claims of marginalisation, particularly regarding preparations for the November 2025 local government elections.

Although Garba has publicly denied plans to resign, his absence has amplified public concern and added momentum to rumours of an internal rift at the top levels of Niger State’s government.
