Borno Police Confirm Giwa Barracks Blast Was Accidental, Urge Calm
The Borno State Police Command has moved to allay fears following an explosion at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri on Wednesday night, clarifying that the incident was not a hostile attack but a case of accidental detonation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The police explained that the explosion was the result of “friendly fire” from within the barracks’ armoury. The command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that initial investigations ruled out external aggression and confirmed that the security situation in the area remains stable.
“Following reports of explosions heard across Maiduguri, preliminary findings suggest a friendly-fire incident at the Giwa Barracks armoury. There is no evidence of an enemy attack, and the area is fully secured,” Daso affirmed.
Emergency response teams, including security operatives, explosive ordnance specialists, and fire service personnel, were swiftly deployed to the scene and successfully contained the fire that followed the explosion.
The police urged residents to remain calm and assured the public that updates would be provided as further information emerges.
In a related statement, the Borno State Government attributed the fire outbreak to the prevailing extreme heat in the region. The Directorate of Fire Service under the Ministry of Information and Internal Security explained that the unusually high temperatures may have triggered the ignition of explosives stored in the barracks.
“The fire affected a section of the ammunition storage facility, leading to multiple explosions. Initial investigations point to intense heat as a likely cause,” the statement read.
A coordinated response involving the Nigerian Army Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and Borno State Fire Service ensured the flames were brought under control without further incident.
