11 Killed in Fresh Damascus Suburb Violence as Armed Groups Clash With Security

The unrest began late Tuesday when armed groups launched coordinated attacks on both civilian targets and public security forces in Sahnaya, located south of the capital. Eyewitnesses reported that machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades damaged residential homes and vehicles, leaving residents in fear.
According to local accounts, security forces moved into the heart of Sahnaya under heavy gunfire, particularly targeting neighborhoods predominantly inhabited by members of the Druze community.
This latest flare-up followed a deadly incident a day earlier in Jaramana, another suburb of Damascus, where violence broke out after an audio recording emerged allegedly containing derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. The voice on the recording was reportedly attributed to a member of the Druze community, igniting sectarian clashes that left at least 17 people dead, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
In response, Syria’s Interior Ministry said efforts are underway to trace the identity of the person behind the controversial recording. Meanwhile, leaders of the Druze community in Jaramana denounced the audio clip as a fabrication aimed at sowing discord.
Since the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December, the country’s new Islamist-led administration has pledged national unity and inclusion. However, recurring episodes of violence—including March’s coastal clashes between new regime forces and pro-Assad gunmen—highlight the fragile state of security in post-Assad Syria.
