Senate President Godswill Akpabio has advocated for the establishment of a reward system to recognize and motivate outstanding police officers across Nigeria as part of broader efforts to elevate professionalism within the force.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Monday at the Police Service Commission (PSC) Board Induction and Strategic Management Session in Ikot Ekpene, Akpabio—represented by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin—reaffirmed the National Assembly’s readiness to provide legislative backing for necessary reforms, including the overhaul of outdated laws governing the police.

Akpabio stressed that Nigeria must prioritize merit, discipline, and integrity over mediocrity, favoritism, and impunity if meaningful reforms are to take root. He noted that genuine transformation requires the courage to disrupt the status quo.

He urged the PSC to implement reforms that would reposition the police as community protectors rather than predators, advocating for community policing models similar to those practiced in Japan and Finland, which emphasize empathy, conflict resolution, and neighborhood engagement.

“True reform demands courageous disruption,” Akpabio said. “We must elevate merit over mediocrity, discipline over favoritism, and integrity over impunity. A reward system recognizing officers who embody the finest ideals of public service is essential.”

He emphasized the need to set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), integrate technology into daily policing, and ensure that officers are trained not merely to subdue but to serve. He also advocated for a data-driven and intelligence-led approach to policing, where performance determines reward.

Akpabio acknowledged the systemic challenges facing the police, including funding shortfalls, obsolete training models, low morale, corruption, and public distrust. He called on the PSC board to leave a legacy of meaningful reform and rebuild public trust.

Reminding them of the significance of their appointments, Akpabio said: “This is a call to purpose, a mandate to reform, and a sacred trust to serve. The Nigerian police must be viewed not as a force of coercion but as an engine of trust, justice, and public service.”
