Sanwo-Olu Blasts Peter Obi Over ‘Demarketing’ Nigeria Abroad

Published

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has criticized former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of lacking the moral standing to criticize and demarket Nigeria on the international stage.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sanwo-Olu’s reaction follows comments Obi made during a recent engagement at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, where Obi painted a bleak picture of Nigeria’s economic situation over the past 25 years. Comparing Nigeria to China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, Obi lamented that Nigeria had regressed while other nations had made significant developmental strides.

In a strongly worded statement titled, “Factually Addressing Mr. Peter Obi’s Criticism of Nigeria at Johns Hopkins University”, Sanwo-Olu condemned Obi’s remarks, describing them as “unflattering” not only towards the Nigerian government but also towards the country itself.

Sanwo-Olu argued that Obi contributed to the poverty challenges in Nigeria, citing his tenure as Anambra State governor, during which he said the poverty rate rose significantly. He pointed out that after Obi left office, his successor, Willie Obiano, managed to drastically reduce the poverty rate from nearly 60 percent to 14.8 percent.

The Lagos governor said:
“I am not sure Mr. Obi is morally well placed to make the alarming claims he made about Nigeria at Johns Hopkins. Mr. Obi contributed to the increase in poverty in Nigeria.”

Sanwo-Olu further criticized Obi’s record in governance, stating that during his eight-year tenure, Obi failed to build a single school or a standalone hospital and did not sustainably provide credit facilities for economic growth.

He added:
“It is ironic that someone who did not significantly improve education, healthcare, or poverty levels in Anambra would now criticize the Federal Government, which is actively working on these sectors.”

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that public figures abroad should project Nigeria positively rather than tarnish its image, warning that such negative portrayals could have lasting impacts on the country’s global reputation.
