Prosecute Killers in Jos, Not Abuja – NBA Warns Over Silent Releases
In response to the recent wave of deadly attacks in Plateau State, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a firm call for suspects arrested in connection with the killings to be prosecuted within the state rather than being transferred to Abuja, where outcomes often become unclear.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The association also advocated for the decentralization of policing in Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to authorize states to establish armed State Police forces that can adequately defend their communities.
This stance was conveyed through a press briefing held by the four NBA branches in Plateau State—Jos, Bukuru, Pankshin, and Shendam—represented by Jos Branch Chairperson, Barrister Leah Dagung.
Dagung expressed frustration over the lack of transparency when suspects are moved to Abuja, suggesting many are quietly released without justice being served. “All arrested perpetrators should be tried within Plateau, not in Abuja where we rarely hear of the outcomes,” she said.
She further emphasized the need for community-based defense mechanisms, citing the inadequacy of current security personnel. “If the federal security apparatus cannot protect us, then local communities must be empowered with tools for self-defense,” she urged.
Dagung also called on the government to provide relief and rehabilitation for the victims of the attacks, which recently claimed over 100 lives and destroyed property in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas.
She concluded by reaffirming the NBA’s commitment to advocating for justice and peace, stating, “The NBA on the Plateau will not remain silent while our communities are turned into killing fields. We will use every legal and moral platform to pursue accountability.”

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.
