Adamawa’s Anti-Rape Coalition Elects New Leaders, Pledges Renewed Fight Against Violence
The Coalition Against Rape and Violence (CARAV) in Adamawa State has ushered in a new leadership team, with Hajiya Amina Hanga emerging as the chairperson. The new executive includes Aisha Abubakar as vice chairperson, Abbas Ibrahim as secretary, Mustapha Gambo Muhammad as assistant secretary, Mustapha Muhammad as treasurer, and Dayyabu Abdulqadir Waziri as financial secretary. Together, they represent a unified front drawn from both government and civil society organizations determined to tackle rape and gender-based violence.
In her inaugural remarks, Amina Hanga emphasized the urgency of collective action. “This gathering is not just a formality; it’s a rekindling of a critical movement that should never go silent. We are reaffirming our commitment to end rape, sexual violence, and all forms of abuse through collaboration and strategic engagement,” she stated.
Founding members of CARAV echoed similar sentiments. Maryam Ahmad Sabo stressed the importance of prevention through widespread public awareness campaigns, while Professor Muhammad Tabi’u, SAN, recounted the coalition’s origins in 2011. He referenced a high-profile rape case involving security personnel that catalyzed the formation of the group, prompting them to adopt evidence-based approaches to justice and advocacy.
With the new leadership in place, CARAV is poised to revamp its operations, strengthen community outreach, and push for systemic reforms that safeguard vulnerable groups and empower survivors across Adamawa State.

The Allegation: The survivor, Malam Babawo Tudun Nasera—whose 17-year-old brother Salim was among the deceased—stated in a video that authorities wanted the miners to halt operations, but they continued working based on instructions allegedly given by Babangida.

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
