Although eleven states had already adopted the State Funded Procurement Guidelines for family planning in 2024, Akwa Ibom had yet to contribute to the National Basket Fund or allocate direct funding for the procurement of family planning commodities and related consumables.
However, during a meeting with the Ibom Advocacy Core Group, the state’s new Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving family planning efforts. He noted that Governor Umo Eno’s administration recognizes the role of family planning in enhancing both maternal health outcomes and economic development.
Dr. Emmanuel assured that budgetary provisions would be made to cover the state’s contribution to the National Basket Fund and for consumables used in administering family planning services. He also expressed optimism that allocated funds would be disbursed effectively, with the Ministry playing an active role in monitoring the process.
Additionally, the Commissioner revealed plans to recruit 600 healthcare workers across the state, with measures in place to encourage deployment to rural areas through incentives.
He further pledged to strengthen collaborations with partners and stakeholders, emphasizing the Ministry’s open-door policy and commitment to advancing family planning services.
Earlier, Dr. Mandu Ekpenyong, Chairperson of the Ibom Advocacy Core Group, highlighted the need for the state to align with others in funding family planning initiatives. She also urged the government to ensure continuity in the progress made by development partners, particularly The Challenge Initiative (TCI), which currently supports family planning programs in ten local government areas.
Ekpenyong emphasized the importance of state ownership as external partners prepare to wind down their support.
