NAAT Warns of Impending Strike Over ₦50bn Allowance Exclusion
The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has threatened to initiate a nationwide strike following reports that the Federal Government intends to allocate ₦50 billion in Earned Academic Allowances solely to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, NAAT urged the government to delay the disbursement until a joint meeting is convened involving all four university-based unions to develop a fair and inclusive distribution framework.
The union issued this warning in a statement released after its 58th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on April 9 and 10, 2025. NAAT President, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, who signed the statement, expressed strong disapproval of what the union described as a discriminatory allocation process, which it warned could destabilize the industrial peace currently enjoyed on university campuses.
NAAT emphasized that while ASUU represents teaching staff and is entitled to Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), other unions — including NAAT, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) — are also beneficiaries of Earned Allowances (EA). The union said the failure to include non-teaching staff in the ₦50 billion allocation breaches past agreements.
The union referenced a meeting held on January 23, 2025, where the Minister of Education and representatives of the four unions agreed that the funds in the 2025 budget were meant for both EA and EAA. NAAT noted that the minister had acknowledged an earlier misstatement and apologized, pledging to correct the narrative.
Further expressing concern, NAAT criticized the government’s failure to continue renegotiations based on the 2009 agreement. According to the union, only one inaugural meeting has been held with the re-negotiation committee, yet a report was submitted without substantial consultation.
Consequently, NAAT has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the letter directed solely to ASUU. The union insists that a meeting with all stakeholders must occur before the ₦50 billion is released, warning that failure to comply may lead to industrial unrest.
Additionally, NAAT called for the reactivation of negotiations on the 2009 agreement and urged that its members’ Earned Allowances be mainstreamed. The union appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, lawmakers, student leaders, and security agencies to intervene in the matter to prevent a breakdown of peace in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the FCT University of Science and Technology in Abaji will begin operations during President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wike made the revelation on Tuesday while on a thank-you tour of Abaji Area Council, appreciating residents for supporting Tinubu’s candidates in the February 21 FCT area council elections.
He noted that the FCT Administration is already putting in place the necessary infrastructure and essential facilities to ensure the university’s successful launch.
Wike urged the community to remain patient, assuring that the university would become a reality within Tinubu’s tenure.
“From our discussions, it is clear how significant this university is, not only for the people of Abaji but for all FCT residents. It will create jobs and drive development in the community. I would be honored to officially open the university for operations,” he said.
The minister emphasized that his visit was to thank residents for keeping their promise to support the President, highlighting the importance of acknowledging positive deeds.
Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:
“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
Wike also praised the outgoing Abaji Area Council Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a humble and dedicated leader.
