“2026 World Cup: FIFA Set To Decide On Nigeria vs DR Congo Eligibility Dispute Monday”.

Published

on

World football’s governing body, FIFA, is set to issue a ruling on Monday that could significantly impact Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The controversy stems from a formal complaint filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the Democratic Republic of Congo Football Association (DRC FA), alleging that six ineligible players were fielded during last year’s African play-offs.

Nigeria was eliminated on penalties in Morocco, seemingly ending their qualification hopes. However, the NFF maintains that the issue is far from resolved.

“We believe we still have a chance; that’s why we filed the petition. If we thought otherwise, we wouldn’t have pursued it,” said NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, emphasizing that Nigeria followed proper procedures in submitting their documents and legal arguments.

The case revolves around FIFA’s rules on nationality switches, which allow a player to change international allegiance only once, following a formal approval process.

Nigeria argues, with evidence reportedly cited by BBC Sport, that the DRC FA misrepresented key information regarding the players’ eligibility, particularly since dual citizenship is prohibited under DR Congo’s domestic law.

The dispute has drawn wider attention due to the involvement of CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba, who is closely connected to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Both sides are reportedly prepared to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary, prompting FIFA to handle the case with extreme caution.

If Nigeria’s protest is upheld, the Super Eagles would be reinstated in the intercontinental play-offs in Mexico later this month, facing the winner of Jamaica versus New Caledonia for a final spot at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, warned that the saga may extend beyond Monday’s decision.

“This will take time, and whether Nigeria or DR Congo prevails, the case could ultimately end up at the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” he said.
